MT Unexpected Threat: Are Moose More Dangerous than Bears?

Montana is home to many potentially dangerous animals, including bears, wolves, and mountain lions. However, have you ever considered that moose might be the most dangerous?

With so many big apex predators that call Montana home, a moose probably never crosses your mind. That's part of the reason they rarely are considered to be labeled with caution.

Alaska has the highest moose population in the United States, and there are around 10 reported attacks each year in the state. In 2023, at least four people were injured by moose in Colorado, according to a report by The Colorado Sun. There have been deaths and injuries in Montana, but not as often.

Based on hunter surveys, the estimated moose population is currently between 9,800 and 11,700. That means your chances of running across one of these massive animals are good, especially in western Montana, which has the highest population.

Moose are not searching for a fight, but they are known to be more aggressive in the breading season between September and October. Especially the bulls (male moose.)

Baby moose are among the cutest creatures ever, especially with their long legs and disproportional bodies; STAY AWAY. It's not the babies you have to worry about; it's the overly protective mama cow who will keep a watchful eye. Mama moose don't play, and if you get near her babies, she is likely to charge.

The baseline here is just don't get near these animals. They want to be left alone. Bulls can weigh nearly 1,800 pounds and stand up to 7 feet tall; that's not something you want to get tangled up with. Respect their space and maintain a safe distance.
