Within the next month, many of Montana's ski areas will open. Skiers and snowboarders are waiting with anticipation to break out their gear, clothes, and helmets for opening day. Whether you prefer fancy ski resorts or local mountains, there are ski areas for everyone.
Wherever you might live in Montana, you are within a decent distance of a ski mountain.
We have fantastic news for folks looking for a new place to ski or snowboard, and the new owners will surprise you.
Unofficial Networks announced the City of Missoula and Missoula County have bought the rights to Marshall Mountain. The city of Missoula and the county have pledged funds from grants, donations, and money to refurbish the mountain and get it up and running.
Marshall Mountain opened to the public in the 1950s and expanded over the decades. The mountain dealt with low snowfall for years, and with dwindling funds, the ski area closed during the 2000s.

The City of Missoula and Missoula County plan on adding a new lodge, lifts, runs, and updating the equipment. The master plan is to have the mountain functional and running within the next two years.
This addition means Missoula will have three ski areas for locals to enjoy. Missoulians have Snowbowl and Lost Trail during the winter, but Marshall Mountain will be a great addition.
This news could be huge for the future of local ski mountains. We could see more local mountains become sources of income for cities or counties. It means locals would have an actual opinion on what happens to their ski area. That's incredible news for the future of Montana ski areas.
