This plan has been in the works for years.

The Department of Homeland Security has been working towards making driver's licenses and identification cards to meet federal levels of security.
In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to make states require a higher level of authentication when getting a driver's license or identification card.
It's been a long time coming, but you were supposed to have a REAL ID to travel by May 7th, 2025, but things have changed.
REAL ID Gets Pushed Back...Sort Of
The Points Guy reports The Department of Homeland Security is giving citizens more time to acquire their REAL ID.
What does that mean?
You have until 2027 to acquire a REAL ID to enjoy air travel, but there is a catch.
Starting May 7th, 2025, you can use a REAL ID to get through TSA at airports, but if you have a standard driver's license or identification card, you will face delays in confirming your identity.
That means TSA could last longer for those who don't have a REAL ID starting on May 7th, 2025.
REAL IDs have had multiple delays in the past few years, but that is changing.
What Do Montanans Do?
Book your appointment to get a REAL ID.
Just schedule a time to acquire a REAL ID from your local DMV.
Montana's Department of Motor Vehicles has a guide on what you need to bring to get your REAL ID.
If you have a passport, you can use that starting on May 7th, 2025, until you get your REAL ID.
You might as well get your new ID now before you realize you are at the airport with an invalid identification card and have to go home.
