The Department of Homeland Security has been working towards making driver's licenses and identification cards to meet federal levels of security.

In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to make states require a higher level of authentication when getting a driver's license or identification card.

It's been a long time coming, but you were supposed to have a REAL ID to travel by May 7th, 2025, but things have changed.

What does that mean?

You have until 2027 to acquire a REAL ID to enjoy air travel, but there is a catch.

Starting May 7th, 2025, you can use a REAL ID to get through TSA at airports, but if you have a standard driver's license or identification card, you will face delays in confirming your identity.

That means TSA could last longer for those who don't have a REAL ID starting on May 7th, 2025.
