Popular Montana Landmark Featured in Famous Dave Matthews Video
Did you know one of Dave Matthews’ most powerful music videos was filmed right here in Montana? Yep, the video for his solo hit “Gravedigger,” off the 2003 Some Devil album, has some serious Big Sky Country vibes. And once you know that, it’s impossible not to see it.
The Story Behind Dave Matthews’ “Gravedigger” Video
The video, directed by the legendary Mark Pellington (you might recognize his work from Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”), was filmed near Livingston, with the Crazy Mountains standing tall in the background like ghostly sentinels. There’s a lonely stretch of prairie, a tiny country church, and a whole lot of wind. It’s eerie and beautiful all at once.

That church, by the way? It’s the one in Melville, just a short drive from Big Timber. If you’ve ever cruised through the area, you might’ve done a double take and said to yourself, “Wait a minute, isn’t that...?” Yep. It is. And if you’re a Dave fan, it’s worth a little side trip.

Here’s where it gets even more Montana. After filming wrapped, rumor has it Dave Matthews strolled into a local bar and played a few songs for whoever was lucky enough to be there. No cameras. No press. Just a guy and his guitar, playing to a crowd that probably didn’t believe their luck.

Fast forward to 2025, and Dave Matthews is performing a solo show at the Wildlands Festival with Lukas Nelson and Molly Tuttle in Big Sky. In the past, Matthews has been spotted playing a private show at the ultra-exclusive Yellowstone Club.
The next time you’re passing through Paradise Valley or hanging out in Melville, remember, this place holds a special kind of magic.
