Jack White took a break from working on his upcoming third solo album to interview actor Gary Oldman for Interview recently, and while the subject was Oldman's career and his work in the new Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour, White still managed to drop a few hints about what fans can expect from his next record.

"I’ve been recording in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville," said White when Oldman asked him what he'd been up to lately. "I’ve never recorded in New York or L.A. before. I tried to go to some new places and meet musicians I’ve never met before, and see if I could get to a new place. I’m getting somewhere."

After offering to send Oldman an early sampler of songs from the album, White offered a tongue-in-cheek description of the music, adding, "It’s good gardening music or roofing music or, you know, back-alley stabbing music. I’m trying to think of some good activities that people haven’t written songs for yet."

White's current studio adventures follow a period in which he tracked demos for the album in a bare apartment, using an old reel-to-reel recorder he'd purchased with lawnmowing money as a teenager. He took a similarly fanciful stab at summing up his direction in a profile piece published earlier this year, musing, "I’m going to try to write songs where I can’t be heard by the next-door neighbor. And I want to write like Michael Jackson would write — instead of writing parts on the instruments or humming melodies, you think of them. To do everything in my head and to do it in silence and use only one room."
