Jack White Is Opening a Third Man Records Pressing Plant and Record Store in Detroit

As the vinyl revival keeps spinning along, man with a plan Jack White is forging full speed ahead and expanding his Nashville-based Third Man Records label to open a record pressing plant in his hometown of Detroit.

"Third Man is thrilled to announce that we will be opening a vinyl record pressing plant, and in it we will run brand new record presses," reads a statement on the label's website. "There's a bottlenecking in the record pressing industry right now – so much glorious demand, so few presses. We want to help ease the flow, and we want to bring more "real-life manufacturing jobs back to Detroit." This will be the first vinyl record pressing plant in Detroit since Archer Record Pressing back in 1965. The pressing plant is slated to open around the middle of next year.

This comes hot on the heels of the grand opening of White's retail record store, which is due to open Friday (Nov. 27). The Third Man retail store, located at 441 West Canfield in Detroit, will open it's doors with a bang including performances by Margo Price, Lillie Mae Rische, and Detroit garage legends the Gories. The store will offer special repressings of vintage titles from the Tamla label, Motown's early imprint.

"Part of the concern in this world is that vinyl can very easily turn into an exclusionary thing,"Thir Man rep Ben Blackwell told Pitchfork. "But this is going to make it easier for a little punk band to make 300 copies of a 7-inch."
