Watch Johnny Marr Play a Smiths Song With the Last Shadow Puppets
As a supergroup side project of Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, the Last Shadow Puppets already has plenty of star power. But last night (July 10) in Manchester, England, they got even stronger thanks to one of that city’s favorite musical sons. Johnny Marr sat in with them on a version of “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me,” which Marr originally recorded when he was in the Smiths.
Rolling Stone found the video that's embedded above, and they recount a funny anecdote. Apparently, Mike Joyce, the drummer of the Smiths, was in attendance, and Marr’s cameo caused Joyce to describe what happened on Facebook. “So I'm at the Last Shadow Puppets gig tonight and Johnny Marr walks on and they play, 'Last Night I Dreamt...'“ he wrote. “The guy next to me says, ‘Seen the guy on the right with black hair? That's Johnny Marr, the guitarist from The Smiths and this is a Smiths song they're playing.’ I didn't say owt, I just couldn’t.”
After releasing Everything You’ve Come to Expect, his second album with the Last Shadow Puppets, in March, Turner has been devoted to spending time with that group, which he formed with Miles Kane back in 2007. Although he hasn’t called time on the Arctic Monkeys, he’s not sure when they will reconvene. “But there will be at some point,” he said of their plans. “I mean, we’ll see with that.”
“Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” appeared on 1987's Strangeways, Here We Come, the fourth and final full-length LP by the Smiths. As a single, it reached No. 30 on the U.K. chart.
