One Thing That Surprises New Montana Residents the Most
There are several things you'll need to get used to if you decide to move to Montana. It's full of wide-open spaces where you may not see another person for miles. Here's something that surprises people the most about Big Sky Country.
I'll admit, I'm not a local. I've been warned not to reveal that fact, but I am what I am. I grew up in Idaho, which, to be honest, isn't much different than Montana. Since I moved to Montana, there's been one thing that I personally had to get used to, and that's living near train tracks.
What Surprises People Most About Moving to Montana
For me, trains have become a part of my daily life. First, I lived by train tracks near Bear Canyon, and now I live by them in Manhattan. Wherever you go in Montana, there's going to be trains. That's just the way it is here. It's something that I quickly got used to.

So, when I see people complaining about having to wait for a train to go by at a crossing, or a whistle blasting off in the middle of the night, it makes me laugh.
People are moving to Montana from residential neighborhoods and gated communities in other states, and are completely caught off guard when they're inconvenienced by a train. I've even seen someone suggest that Montana needs to limit the hours that trains can operate.
Thankfully, the trains aren't going anywhere. I've always wondered what it would be like to be a train engineer. Maybe in another life.
