Whitefish Residents Say Goodbye to Beloved Longtime Restaurant

Montana’s restaurant scene is changing, and for locals who have been living in the state for years, it's difficult to see their favorite neighborhood gathering spots closing down.

This year brought a wave of bittersweet farewells to institutions that helped define the state's character. In Whitefish, the beloved Wasabi Sushi Bar and Ginger Grill announced an abrupt and permanent closure following a tragedy within the Wasabi family.

The restaurant was open for over 25 years, and helped shape the local food scene in Whitefish. (Note: The restaurant is entirely separate from the Wasabi location in Bozeman.)

The restaurant shared the following heartfelt message on social media:

Due to unfortunate circumstances and a tragedy in our Wasabi family, we are forced to end our engagement with you all. We are permanently closed as of today. Thank you for your patronage. It has been an honor to be part of this beautiful community.

Wasabi is not alone in turning off the lights. Earlier this year, Butte's legendary Pekin Noodle Parlor, one of the oldest continually operating Chinese restaurants in America also closed its doors after more than a century of service, buckling under modern economic pressures and shifting dining habits.

As Montana grows and changes, losing these cultural cornerstones stings. From mountain towns to historic mining hubs, these closures remind us just how much we rely on local spaces to anchor our communities, leaving memories that will long outlive the menus.
