U2, Coldplay, Depeche Mode Among 2017’s Top-Grossing Tours
U2's decision to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree has worked out in their favor. It was named the top-grossing tour of 2017, with Coldplay and Depeche Mode also finishing in the Top 10.
The concert industry publication Pollstar has released their list of the Top 20 tours from the past year, which combined brought in a record total of $2.66 billion, an increase of $264 million from last year. U2 earned $316 million by playing to 2.7 million people across 50 shows with an average ticket price of more than $116.
Coldplay were in third place, behind Guns N' Roses, grossing $238 million, with 2.5 million tickets sold over 54 shows (average ticket price: $97). Depeche Mode's Spirit tour played to 1.87 million fans on 73 nights and brought in $141.1 million on an average ticket price of $78, which put them in sixth place. Pop, country and classic rock dominated the rest of the list. The only other alternative band to make the Top 20 was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who pulled in $73.5 million from 67 shows, with 882,035 tickets sold (average ticket price: $83).
If those average ticket prices seem steep, they're nothing compared to what it costs to see Bruce Springsteen's Broadway show. His 60 dates at the 975-seat Walter Kerr Theatre have raked in $87.8 million – good enough for 14th place – thanks to an average ticket price of $1,500.
Perhaps surprisingly, the Foo Fighters did not make the Top 20 from their North American and European dates this year. However, with a busy itinerary for next year in support of Concrete and Gold, beginning with dates in Australia and New Zealand in January and February and coming to North America in April, they're not likely to be excluded from next year's list.
