Billy Corgan Covers Miley Cyrus Hit ‘Wrecking Ball’ for ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’
Billy Corgan has covered the Miley Cyrus hit single "Wrecking Ball" for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on the program's 'Cover Room' segment where an artist performs a song that isn't their own. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman, who now goes by his full given name of "William Patrick Corgan," took on the song acoustically, as can be seen in the clip above.
The singer recently debuted the song during an appearance at a show in Toronto last week and fan-recorded audio surfaced from that performance, but the Tonight Show appearance was the first pro-recorded version of Corgan's cover of the Bangerz hit that has been released.
Corgan appeared on The Tonight Show two weeks ago to showcase the single "Aeronaut" from his latest solo effort, Ogilala, which was released earlier this month (Oct. 13). One of the more interesting aspects of the record is it features his first studio performances with James Iha since the guitarist left Smashing Pumpkins following their 2000 split.
The singer has speculated in recent months as to whether the Pumpkins will reunite with their original lineup of Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. "[A reunion tour] has been knocked about. There's certainly gears that turn and things get waved around, but until it's inked, I'm in the dark as much as anybody," the singer said. "But I'll say this and I mean it: If we never play a note together again, that's okay. I'm way, way more interested in the fact that we have peace with each other. I've reached the point in my life where I'm not in a hurry to get to anything. If it's there, great. If it's not, cool."
Back in 2016, Iha joined Corgan for a series of three Smashing Pumpkins performances in Los Angeles and Chicago, fueling further rumors that a reunion with the original lineup was imminent.
