Bozeman Animal Shelter Shares News That Will Break Your Heart

If I had all the money in the world, I would adopt every animal I could and give them a loving home. 

During the holiday season, a lot of people add a furry friend to their family. It can be such a wonderful way to celebrate the giving season and to give a warm home to an animal in need. Every dog and cat I had growing up was as important as the rest of the family.

These animals bring comfort, joy, and happiness to your family and your home. If I could adopt a dog or cat, I would, but my apartment doesn't allow it. So when I see things like this, it breaks my heart. 

KBZK reports that the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman has seen an increase in animal surrenders this year. It's a steep 25% increase from 2021.

What's the reason? Some folks at the animal shelter think the increase is partly due to the increased cost of living. Rent prices have been skyrocketing in the Gallatin Valley—even basic supplies have dramatically increased in price over the last few years. I would also bring up how many rental properties, from houses to apartments, don't allow animals. 

I find it odd that a place like Bozeman, with numerous dog parks and high-quality pet stores, is so anti-pet. Though I understand that having an animal means a certain amount of wear on a living space, I still believe that if you have the space and capability to house a pet, it should be allowed. Often, humans are much more destructive than pets.

To speak to an even more important matter: if you are adopting a pet, you need to make sure you can take care of that animal for a long time to come. Especially during the holidays, shelters see an increase in surrendered animals. We can only assume that this is because people decide to gift or adopt pets without really understanding the responsibility required to care for one. While it's a well-intentioned sentiment, we urge everyone to consider the decision very, very seriously before adopting a pet.

These animals are looking for loving homes, and many of us can provide that. Hopefully, Bozeman property owners can loosen animal restrictions, and people can bring these cuddly creatures into a warm home for a long, long time.
