High Wind Watch: 70+ MPH Gusts Possible in Bozeman Area
A High Wind Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday evening, and residents across southwest Montana should prepare now for potentially dangerous conditions.
Forecasters are calling for sustained west winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, with wind gusts that could exceed 70 mph, especially in areas near the Continental Divide. High winds can be cause extensive damage to homes and unsecured items.
The watch includes the Interstate 90 corridor between Bozeman and Whitehall, the Madison and Beaverhead River Valleys, Meagher County valleys, the Elkhorn and Boulder Mountains, and the Canyon Ferry area. Drivers traveling along I-90 should be particularly cautious. Wind gusts over 70 mph can make travel treacherous, especially for big rigs, campers, trailers, and other high-profile vehicles. Sudden crosswinds can push vehicles out of their lanes or even tip them over.

Beyond the highways, strong winds may send loose outdoor items airborne, damage fences and roofs, and knock down tree limbs and power lines. Isolated power outages are possible if gusts reach their full potential.
Now is the time to secure patio furniture, trampolines, garbage cans, and any other loose debris around your home. If you have travel plans late Tuesday or Wednesday, consider adjusting them or allowing extra time to reach your destination safely.
Conditions can change quickly in Montana, especially near mountain passes and open valleys. Keep an eye on updated forecasts and warnings, and take time to check road conditions before travel. High winds are no joke, especially in Montana.
