Watch Coldplay Debut a Brand New Song to Help Houston’s Hurricane Recovery
Last night in Miami, Coldplay showed solidarity with those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The band wrote up a song called "Houston," and you can watch the first, and only, performance of it above.
As Chris Martin told the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, they wrote the song "because we all grew up loving country music, and of course that's kind of what we think of when we go to Texas. So if you'll bear with us, this is a new song and we'll never play this again. It’s a once-off and it’s called ‘Houston.’ We’re gonna sing it in Miami for everybody here, and we’re gonna send it over there to everyone who missed the show." Coldplay had been scheduled to play Houston's NRG Stadium this past Friday, but the storm forced them to cancel.
“I’m dreamin’ of when I get back to Houston," Martin sings in the bare-bones country-styled tune. "I’m dreamin’ of that very special place / I’m dreamin’ of when Houston has no problems / In that city where they send you into space.” Later, he references surrounding towns like Corpus Christi and Galveston.
In the second verse, he sings, "From Miami, we are sending love to Houston / We are praying that you make it through the rain / I know nothing's gonna break the will of Houston / Oh, and we can't wait to go down there again."
Coldplay had been scheduled to play Houston's NRG Stadium this past Friday, but the storm forced them to cancel. After having started a world tour in early June, the band is now taking nearly a month off and will reconvene for the final six dates on Sept. 23 in Seattle.
