For many, Montana represents the best of the "Old West".

Montana is filled with cowboys and cowgirls, large ranches, millions of cattle, and lots of horses. Tons of people come to Montana to have the experience of the open range while taking in the scenic views of all of the mountain ranges that can be found across the state.

However, it isn't just cowboys and cowgirls, ranches and farms, or wildlife that you will find in The Treasure State.

For years, Montana has been known as a place where folks with different ideas and views can live in harmony. For those who don't know, Montana has quite the "hippie" population. So what is the definition of a hippie? Well, according to Merriam-Webster the definition is as follows:

"a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living) and advocates a nonviolent ethics"

While you won't have too much trouble finding these free-thinking folks across the state, there are a couple of places where they seem to gather in large numbers.

For decades, University towns have been a beacon for those looking to be "enlightened" and here in Montana, you will find both Bozeman and Missoula have a large population that fits the definition. While Bozeman might be a little more cow town, there is still a significant number of folks who view the world through different eyes than the typical Montanan.

However, when it comes to the most hippie town in Montana, it's pretty clear which town wins.

According to the Thrill List, the "most hippie" town in Montana is Missoula. Home of the University of Montana, Missoula has long been known as a haven for those with alternative views and lifestyles. With slogans like "Keep Missoula Weird" and "There's Montana...and then there's Missoula", many in the city have embraced it.

While I've never fully embraced the lifestyle, I certainly appreciate the fact that people are free to think and believe what they want. Plus, who doesn't like being a little weird from time to time?
