The first day of spring is coming up fast here in Montana. If you have not checked the calendar lately, the official start of spring lands on March 20. It will be here before we know it. Normally by this point we would still be buried under a good bit of snow. This year has felt a little different. The warmer temperatures lately have made it feel more like an extra-long fall than a true Montana winter. Nature, however, is right on schedule.

The first grizzly bear sighting of the season has already been reported inside Yellowstone National Park. Biologists working in the northern portion of the park spotted the bear on March 9. According to reports, the bear was feeding on the remains of a bull bison in a remote area of the park.
These early sightings are pretty typical. Adult male grizzlies are usually the first to emerge from hibernation, often coming out in early March. Female bears with cubs tend to stay in their dens longer and usually appear sometime in April or early May.

Looking back at recent years, the timing is pretty similar. The first sighting in 2025 was reported on March 14. In 2024 it happened on March 3, and during both 2022 and 2023 the first bears were seen on March 7.

Park officials remind visitors that all areas of Yellowstone are considered bear habitat. If you are hiking or exploring the park, carrying bear spray and staying alert are always good ideas. Be BEAR AWARE!
