Now That Winter Is Here In Montana, What About The Urban Campers?

As the first big snow of the season covers most of Montana, we can expect colder temperatures, slick roads, and everything else that winter brings with it.

Winter can be long here in The Treasure State and if you're not prepared for it, can also be dangerous. For long-time Montana residents, it's business as usual, but for those who are new, or living in less-than-ideal conditions, it can be a real challenge.

Over the last couple of years, many Montana towns have seen an increase in those who are homeless, and with temperatures dropping below freezing, many Montana communities might not be equipped to help all of those in need.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you're no doubt familiar with the term "Urban Campers". It's a term that has become quite popular as many folks have taken to living in their cars, trucks, and RVs as well as tents and makeshift shelters due to the high cost of living.

While it's a state-wide problem, cities like Bozeman and Missoula seem to be the most affected. A quick drive around both cities will show you that the numbers have increased and while city officials of both towns have addressed the issue, with winter upon us, what happens to those that are living out among the conditions?

It's no secret that it's a hot topic with many Montanans divided over the solutions to help. However, the truth is, there doesn't seem to be a one-size-fits-all answer. Several Montana towns have warming centers, but the problem is, that sometimes there are more people than beds in many cases.

The folks over at HRDC in Bozeman put out a press release in which they stated the following:

“For folks whose campers or cars are not weatherized to withstand extreme temperatures, or for those who have been camping in tents, we are able to provide a warm, safe place to sleep during inclement weather”

They are also looking for those who would like to volunteer to help out by donating items like gloves, socks, hats, coats, hand warmers, and other items that can be passed out to the urban campers who are struggling to stay warm.
