Montana hosts many exciting events throughout the year, but there's one winter tradition that never fails to get me excited—an adrenaline-fueled competition that tests the determination of two people and a trusty steed. Ladies and gentlemen, this is skijoring.

Skijoring is a high-speed, timed event where a skier is pulled by a horse and rider through a snow-covered course.

Today, this extreme sport is a winter staple across the Rockies and an absolute must-see during the colder months.

This past weekend, the Big Sky Skijoring Associated hosted the 7th annual Best in the West Showdown, and I was lucky enough to attend. I have attended a few other skijoring events and this one held in Big Sky is top-notch.

Here's a recap of my Montana adventure at the Big Sky Best in the West Showdown...

Dress to Impress

Don't be surprised if you show up to a skijoring event and find people sporting their wildest or most stylish outfits. Both competitors and spectators embrace the fun, sporting everything from tutus to vintage, neon-colored ski suits. Whether you rock a giant buffalo coat or a classic Pendleton jacket, anything goes at skijoring—so dress to stand out!

Not Just Skijoring

While the main event is undoubtedly the heart-pounding race down the snow-packed course—where skiers hold on for dear life—there's plenty more to experience beyond the competition.

Freestyle snowmobilers, skiers, and snowboarders were literally flying through the air with jaw-dropping performances. Montanan Keith Sayers and other top-tier riders put on one heck of a show, launching off ramps and performing gravity-defying tricks.

Beyond those performances, the event had an eclectic mix of food and retail vendors. From custom cowboy hats by Yellowstone Hat Co. to handmade western wear by KLS Designs and stylish women's ski suits from TaraShakti, there was no shortage of unique finds.

Staying Warm

Outdoor winter events in Montana can be bitterly cold if you are standing still for hours, but the Best in the West Showdown had plenty of fire pits scattered throughout the venue. Perfect for thawing out your fingers and just a great spot to soak up the atmosphere. These cozy spots made a big difference and were a nice touch.

Don't Miss It!

If you ever get the chance to attend a skijoring event—especially the Best in the West Showdown in Big Sky—don't pass it up. Between the races, epic freestyle performances, and energetic crowd, it's an experience you won't forget.
