The Clock Is Ticking For Your Regular Montana Driver’s License

In just over a year, Montanans who use their state-issued Driver's License Card or State-ID Card to fly commercially or visit federal facilities will run into an issue.

Here in Montana, we've been reminded about Real ID now and again... seemingly once a year, or so, preparing us for the (pushed back) changeover date.

What is Real ID?

According to DHS.gov, the Real ID ACT established minimum security standards for issuing licenses, production, and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting (for certain purposes) driver's licenses and ID cards from states that do not meet the Act's minimum standards.

Do I need a Real ID?

To figure out whether you need to upgrade your ID to a Real ID, or not, DHS.gov has a handy tool for you to use. Click the button below to give it a go.

How to get a REAL ID in Montana

  • Alternatively, if you want to pay extra money to get it faster without an appointment, you can use ExpressMVD.
    • I'd recommend just going to an ExpressMVD location, rather than calling.
