Watch John Prine, Brandi Carlile and Sturgill Simpson Team for ‘Summer’s End’ on ‘Colbert’
The legendary John Prine appeared on CBS' The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday night (April 12) for a special performance of his song "Summer's End" with special guests Brandi Carlile and Sturgill Simpson. Readers can press play above to watch the moving performance of the song, which is the lead single from Prine's new album, The Tree of Forgiveness.
As Colbert introduced Prine, Carlile and Simpson, he noted that the three were performing together for the first time. "Summer's End," a slow, searching song, highlights Prine's trademark poignant lyricism and offers hope as a season of life draws to an end.
"Well, you never know how far from home you're feeling / Until you watch the shadows cross the ceiling / Well, I don't know, but I can see it snowing / In your car, the windows are wide open," Prine sings, before Carlile and Simpson join in with harmonies on the chorus: "Just come on home / Come on home / No, you don't have to be alone / Just come on home."
Prine's The Tree of Forgiveness features Carlile on a different track, "I Have Met My Love Today;" Simpson, meanwhile, will be joining Prine for select dates on Prine's 2018 tour in support of his new record. The Tree of Forgiveness was released on Friday (April 13).
