Listen to Supergroup Tears of Silver’s ‘Going Quietly Mad': Exclusive Premiere
Fuzz, haze, noise and pristine pop all merge in the hands of this new collective known as Tears of Silver. We're pleased to premiere their new song, a cover of Al Kooper's "Going Quietly Mad," which originally appeared on his 1971 album New York City (You're a Woman), and you can listen to it above.
This new band features Ken Stringfellow, a founding member of the Posies, who has also played in a reconstructed Big Star and as an R.E.M. sideman. He is joined by three members of Mercury Rev: Grasshopper, Jonathan Donahue (Flaming Lips) and Jesse Chandler (Midlake).
"Isolation, loss, betrayal, detachment... Al Kooper's 1971 'cry in the wilderness' still rings true and clear in the ears of the Tears of Silver as the band's own haunting harmonic sensibility adds even more sympathy to the overtoned remoteness to Al's classic song,” Donahue told us.
The group is heading out on a concert tour this fall but will not be the usual tour grind. Taking a cue from the Posies' recent tours, Tears of Silver will play non-traditional venues with notice of the location in each city sent out to ticket holders 48 hours prior to the show. The dates are listed below, but for more details on obtaining tickets, check out their website.
On these dates, they will perform various songs from their various bands' catalogs, as well as choice covers that figure heavily into their musical lives. Last month, they premiered their cover of Big Star's "Nighttime" at Brooklyn Vegan.
