Liz Phair has started work on her first record since 2010's Funstyle. Apparently, it's going to be a double album, and she began tracking at Ryan Adams' Pax-AM Studios in Los Angeles.

Adams broke the news on social media, saying, "Today we begin the new @PhizLair double album!!!" on Twitter, and coming back nine hours later with, "Unreal. 5 songs in 1 day. All analog. Back to those sounds & that rawness I first heard on Exile. @PhizLair is an American treasure." Accompanying the text were pictures of the session, which included a couple of shots of producer Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt). One of those photos made it onto Instagram, with Adams saying that "PaxAm never sounded so badass."

The full nature of Adams' involvement is unknown, given that Was is spotted at the console in one of the pictures. But Phair has long expressed a desire to work with Adams for a long time. Back in 2012, she said, “I want to make a kickass record, and if I have my way I’ll have Ryan Adams produce it and we’ll do some down and dirty s--- with great songwriting, and it won’t be [Exile in] Guyville, but it will be authentic. And I’ll tour it. I’ll tour the s--- out of that s---."

Meanwhile, Adams is set to release Prisoner next month. Adams has suggested that the songs were influenced by his divorce from Mandy Moore. He called the record “a map for anybody who got lost like I get lost. It’s hope for anybody who’s forgotten what that is. These songs are part of me but they’re now part of anyone who needs them. Records should matter. They do when people need them most. This was my way through total f---ing darkness and things nobody can plan for. I’ll never come as close as this to that place. I won’t have to.”
