The Missoula County Sheriff's Office reported Sunday evening that deputies were involved in a fatal shooting on the Southside Road area of the county.

The incident involved an as-yet-unidentified man swinging a machete and making threats.

According to a report released by the sheriff's office, 'deputies attempted to communicate with the suspect to deescalate the situation, however after the suspect failed to comply with verbal commands deputies utilized a less lethal option to get the suspect to comply with commends. That effort was unsuccessful and the suspect continued to pose a lethal threat.

Shots were then fired by deputies, and the suspect was wounded. Deputies administered first aid at the scene and the suspect was Life Flighted via helicopter to a local hospital for treatment, where he later died of his wounds.'

Sheriff T.J. McDermott issued the following statement.

"Our deputies are faced with difficult and sometimes dangerous situations such as the one incident this evening," said McDermott. "We recognize the profound impacts these tragic events have on our deputies and all those involved. Our heartfelt condolences go out the the family and friends of the suspect involved in this incident."

The incident is now being investigated by the Department of Criminal Investigations at the Montana Department of Justice.

Another fatal incident involving the Missoula Police Department occurred on August 12, and the Department of Criminal Investigation determined that the suspect took his own life.
