As students prepare to move out for the summer, Montana State University is giving unwanted items a second life instead of sending them to the landfill.

MSU will be hosting its first-ever Bobcat Thrift Sale on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, inside Bobcat Stadium. The event is happening from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. both days. Admission is free for students and the general public.

With the school year coming to an end, students are preparing to move out of their current residences and head home for the summer. Several of the items at the thrift sale have been donated by students moving out of the residency halls.

The event is designed to keep unwanted items out of the landfill, according to Garrett Wright, MSU’s Zero Waste coordinator, who said 460,000 pounds of non-diverted trash were generated across campus last May.

Bargain shoppers will be able to take advantage of great deals during the sale. Items will include everything from small appliances to electronic chargers.

One of the biggest draws of the event is the $5 tote bag deal. Shoppers can purchase a tote bag and fill it with as many small items and soft goods as they can fit inside. Larger items will be priced separately.

Bozeman area residents who would like to donate items can do so from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at Stadium Gate 8 along S. 7th Avenue. The same entrance will also be used for the thrift sale throughout the weekend.

Any unsold items will be donated to Habitat for Humanity and HRDC, while proceeds from the event will help fund the Bobcat Thrift Sale’s return in 2027.

The event is sponsored by the MSU Office of Sustainability, Residence Hall Association, Off-Campus Student Life, and ASMSU.
