Parking Commission Mulls Permit District in Downtown Bozeman
As the Bozeman Parking Commission continues to come up with new ways to manage on-street parking, parking officials want to hear from Bozeman residents.
In areas where on-street parking spaces are shared in both commercial and residential areas, the Bozeman Parking Commission has identified the need for a system that works for a majority of drivers. The parking commission has partnered with the Parking Services Division and together the two groups have developed a Parking Permit District (PPD) concept for potential use in Bozeman.
According to the City of Bozeman, the PPD concept is being considered for initial use in residential areas to the immediate North and South of the downtown Bozeman business area. In addition, there are other sections in the area where the PPD might be considered in the near future.
Here is how the City of Bozeman describes a Parking Permit District:
- A geographically defined area, by ordinance, that actively manages public on-street parkingthrough the use of parking permits for residences, businesses, and transient parkers; as well as short term timed parking (meters, etc.).
- On-street occupancy is managed to the 85% standard (adopted by the BPC).
- Resident parking permits are made available for purchase.
- Employee, and Transient parking permits may be available for purchase, depending on level of parking occupancy/inventory.
- Short-term ‘timed’ on-street parking may be available in the district.
Before PPDs can become a reality they require work by the Bozeman City Commission. This work includes creating the rules and procedures for these permit districts, as well as defining geographic boundaries.
The Bozeman Parking Commission is offering the chance for Bozeman residents to engage in a public discussion regarding the PPD idea in an attempt to receive public input.
Two public input sessions will take place at the following locations and times:
May 16, 2019 - Beall Recreation Center, 415 N. Bozeman Avenue - 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
May 21, 2019 - Bozeman Public Library, Community Room - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
