When something becomes a point of interest in our town, we get confused when it disappears.

If you have lived in the Bozeman area for a few years, you know there was a fun statue of Jeannette Rankin in downtown Bozeman. The statue was situated next to the HRDC building and was beloved by many.

The statue of Jeannette Rankin sitting on a crescent moon was right on the corner of the street of Babcock and Tracy Avenue and was a place to sit outside and enjoy a break or lunch.

Many locals in Bozeman were puzzled to see that it was recently removed and replaced with a new art installation.

We reached out to HRDC to see what happened to the statue, and this is what we were told,

The statue on display went back to its artist after the completed contract.

Bozeman doesn't have many statues, and this one was incredibly unique. If you don't know, Montanan Jeannette Rankin was the first woman ever elected to Congress in the 1910s. She still holds the title of the only woman ever elected to Congress from Montana.

Jeannette Rankin was a pacifist and was the only person who voted not to go to war against Japan when Pearl Harbor was attacked. After her life in Congress, she promoted peaceful tactics for the rest of her life.

As sad as we are to see that incredible statue leave, we hope to see some new art installations in the future that connects to the community.

Maybe we should keep a closer eye on all the statues in the Bozeman area to see if any others have disappeared.
