Mountain Jam, the annual music festival at Hunter Mountain, NY, started eleven years ago as a one-day Americana ramble, with only four acts on the bill; this year's lineup was more than 10 times bigger, and ranged from Wilco's experimental indie rock to Courtney Barnett's gritty grunge to Beck's glitchy pop.

Gov't Mule frontman and former Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes has been involved in putting together Mountain Jam since day one, and he essentially owns the stage, jamming with at least five different acts during this year's fest by our count, and headlining with Gov't Mule.

Haynes talked with Diffuser backstage at Mountain Jam 2016 about how the festival balances its adventurous nature with its jam band history. He also took a moment to discuss some of his favorite new music.

In addition, you can check out a wonderful collection of photographs from this year's festival below. Haynes and Gov't Mule will hit the road with ZZ Top for a few select dates this September.
