LIST: Announcing The Best Small Towns In Montana
Let's be honest, there are plenty of fantastic small towns across Montana. From the mountains in the west to the plains of the east, small town living is more popular than ever in Montana. And they're everywhere.
Montana's small towns do have their differences. That's why I won't actually be ranking the towns mentioned here - they're all pretty great, but it matters what's important to you when it comes to small town living.
Whitefish, Hamilton, Red Lodge, Lewistown, Livingston, West Yellowstone, Ennis, Stevensville, Anaconda, Fort Benton...the list of great Montana towns is VERY long. Let's pick some of the absolute best...
Generally characterized by their population, small towns house anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand residents. This population range often fosters a strong sense of camaraderie, where neighbors know each other by name. (Commrex.com)
Lewistown, Montana - With a population of about 6,000 people, Lewistown is perfectly located smack-dab in the middle of Montana. Not many small towns have a 25-mile city trail system and it's own trout hatchery.
Lewistown Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport and does not offer commercial air service. (Commercial flights are pretty close, in Billings or Great Falls if you don't happen to own your own small plane.)
COOL SMALL TOWN FACT: West Yellowstone was first named Riverside but in 1910 the name was changed to Yellowstone. West Yellowstone was incorporated in 1966 and is is Yellowstone National Park's busiest gateway.
COOL SMALL TOWN FACT: Anaconda has it's own Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, Old Works Golf Course - the only JN course in Montana. (The local rates are insanely good, FYI.) The Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness is out the backdoor.
