When national news outlets of any kind bring up Bozeman, you'll find a huge wave of responses and comments. It doesn't matter if the topic is real estate or politics, when the topic is Bozeman, Montana - expect some strong opinions, especially about the cost of living.

A story from Fox Business News was shared on the Fox News Facebook page, entitled: "Bozeman, Montana home to a booming real estate market. The median price of a home in Bozeman is $761,000"

  • The snow can get so deep in Bozeman that you cannot leave your house safely for days!
  • Unaffordable. Who's buying it? Blackrock?
  • Heard it is all retired folks moving there so the regular day to day jobs like restaurant workers and retail workers to keep the stores stocked, and even grocery shelves stocked, are hard to find help for.
  • The most unaffordable places in Montana. Filled up with out-of-staters so now kids that grew up in Bozeman and would like to live there can't afford it.
  • I lived in Montana for 3 years, only an hour from Bozeman, the winters are brutal, couldn't deal with the long very cold winters

The comments on the Fox Business News article continued with hundreds of locals chiming in, along with folks who no longer lived in Montana.

  • All the Yellowstone wannabes
  • It’s amazing! When I went to the University of Montana in Missoula in the late 60’s, Bozeman was a cow town. Montana State University was about the only thing there. Now it’s full of California Liberals who are ruining it and the State of Montana.
  • It gets really cold there, long winters, daylight is 8 am to 4 pm. Used to have family there, they left for one reason or another.
  • I went to college there - it was a college town with people that came there to retire. Now a person can’t afford to buy Kleenex for a head cold there.
  • It gets cold in Montana just remember that when you try to make it through your first winter in the house that you overpaid for.
  • Wow that went down!! (In response to the Fox New median price quote)

Surprisingly, there wasn't a large amount of online 'arguing' about politics. Sure, the red state/blue state stuff came up a lot but there wasn't anything nasty that I read. Opinions were abundant, but almost everyone agreed that the current median home price was very expensive.

  • Starting to have a major homeless problem around there too.
  • I have a photo from 2018. Temperature was -28 and the feels like was -45. This went on for about a two weeks.
  • Lived there for 27 years. As a child, it was a cow town with a college. Now, it is just nasty. We sold our home for 3x what we paid, crime and drugs are up exponentially, and no one who lives and works there can afford to buy a home.
  • All of the California transplant yuppies that live there stay warm and snug in their newly built McMansion’s.

Nostalgia for what Bozeman, Montana used to be like was abundant. Along with a few recommendations for people to pick another state to move to.

  • If you can't handle living somewhere full time you shouldn't be allowed to buy property in those places. Go to Colorado. They are already insane.
  • So sad!! Montanans can’t afford houses that expensive. Unreal.
  • It's not a small city. It's a major college city!
  • I don't think I would consider that booming. I would consider that price gouging.
  • I spent a few years in Bozeman growing up and it was really just a little genuine Montana town. 15 years later it's a miniature Los Angeles with it's very own crack problem and a large portion of people who think they are special.
  • No thanks...…another wanna-be Boulder!
  • They will bring the big town with them and it won't be what they went there for anymore
  • Thank the show Yellowstone for that...

I found it interesting that with the lengthy discussion happening at the same time Gallatin County property tax bills being delivered, there was no specific discussion or complaints about property taxes. Property tax increases have been such a hot topic locally.

  • What they don’t tell you is this has pushed out the locals. Has increased homelessness in the area, more people are living in campers along city streets. The quite affordable area has unfortunately turned into a playground for the ultra wealthy. Pretty sad to see.
  • Not booming for the average person who works there.
  • Nothing left of the small town I loved.
  • It is so sad what has happened to this beautiful Montana town....totally invaded with people that do not appreciate what Montana means. Horribly & ridiculously expensive.
  • This is a double edge sword. Great if you own already or have that kind of cash funding but unaffordable for everyday Montanans.
