Fall has officially arrived on our doorstep, and honestly, it might just be the best time of year. You know it’s here when the trees suddenly burst into color, as if Mother Nature decided to throw confetti all over the mountainsides. Sure, the East Coast gets all the fame with its dense hardwood forests and endless leaf-peeping tourists gawking out their car windows, but let’s not forget Montana has its own showstopper performance every September and October.

Aspen groves turn whole mountainsides into illusions of fire with yellows and reds blending together. Toss in the larches, which pull the ultimate fall trick by swapping green for gold, and you’ve got yourself a season worth slowing down for.

Recently, Stacker put out its list of the 50 best places to view fall foliage in the U.S., and Montana showed up in style. Coming in at #12 was Whitefish, where you can paddle across Whitefish Lake with a front-row view of fiery maples, larch, and the Flathead Valley.

Just one spot higher at #11 was Darby, tucked in the Bitterroot Valley between the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountains. Already jaw-dropping on its own, fall rolls in and paints it like a Bob Ross fever dream.
