Make IKEA’s Famous Meatballs at Home
There are over 50 IKEA locations around the United States, with the nearest to Billings in Denver. The Swedish assemble-at-home furniture store is famous for its quirky, stylish and affordable furniture... and their meatballs. If you've never been to an IKEA store, you can eat free samples of their tasty balls of meat while you browse the store. Now, Yahoo News is reporting that they're sharing the secret recipe with the world. I guess they figure since we're all eating and cooking at home during the coronavirus, they might as well give up the recipe.
Actually, the recipe is very similar to most meatball recipes. A blend of ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, eggs and spices. Since IKEA is European, they use the metric system of measurement. Fun. How many grams are in a pound? Can grams be a volume AND a weight? How many ml = a tablespoon? No one really knows. Do some homeschooling and get your high school kid to help translate.
Anyway, here's the secret formula for IKEA meatballs included below:
- 500g beef mince
- 250g pork mince
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
- 100g breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 5 tablespoons of whole milk
- salt and pepper to taste
Mix all that stuff up, shape into little balls and chill them in the fridge for a couple hours to help them stick together. Brown them on the stove, then bake them for 30 minutes.
Here's the Swedish cream sauce recipe:
- dash of oil
- 40g butter
- 40g plain flour
- 150ml vegetable stock
- 150ml beef stock
- 150ml thick double cream
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Melt the butter and oil and make a roux with the flour and stock. Add the heavy cream, then the soy sauce and mustard at the end. For dessert, you'll probably want some of these:
