Not long ago, Montana was among the top states for new residents in the country, but things have changed. Fewer people are moving to Big Sky Country, and many are moving away.

According to a new study from Consumer Affairs, Americans are on the move in 2026. The data show that while people are still moving to Montana, many are choosing to pack up and move elsewhere.

The study is based on data from people who were considering a move between March 1, 2025, and March 26, 2026.

So, if Montanans are leaving, where are they going?

Surrounding states like Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington are at the top of the list, but some residents are moving further to places like Texas and Florida.

The cost of living in Montana has become extremely expensive in many cities and towns in the Treasure State, which is why many people have decided to leave. Some people have also decided to move for political reasons.

I moved to Montana in 2016, and some may say that I'm part of the problem. I'm originally from Idaho, so the transition was fairly easy for me. Both states share similar values.

That's right. Fewer people are moving to Big Sky Country, and that news comes as a relief for many who call the state home. Montana didn't even crack the top 10 for new residents. It ranks #23 in the country, according to the latest data.
