Montana Is One of the Best States for Rockhounding
If you’re looking for a unique outdoor activity in 2026, rockhounding in Montana should be at the top of your list.
Spring is one of the best times of year to get outside and search for rocks in Montana. As the snow melts and rivers rise, new specimens get exposed along banks and gravel bars. That means better chances of finding something incredible just sitting in plain sight.
I actually got into rockhounding during the pandemic, and it quickly turned into one of my favorite ways to spend a summer day. There’s something about being outside, walking a river, and spotting a flash of color in the rocks that never gets old.

Across the state, you can find an impressive variety of rocks and minerals, including:
- Petrified Wood
- Agates
- Sapphires
- Jasper
- Crystals and Quartz
- Fossils
Montana agates and sapphires have been designated as the state's official gemstones. Since Montana is a huge state, the types of rocks you find depend on where you are. Agates are primarily located in southern and eastern Montana.
I spend a lot of time along rivers in Big Sky Country, and it’s amazing what turns up. I’ve found everything from petrified wood to some really beautiful agates just by slowing down and paying attention.
If you’re new to the hobby, start near rivers or public lands and consider joining groups like Rockhounding Montana or Montana Moss Agate Collectors to learn more.
Fair warning, it can get addictive. I’ve even taken road trips across the state just to find cool rocks. Grab a bucket or backpack and start looking. Montana is full of treasures waiting to be found.
