New Approach Montana has submitted two ballot initiatives to legalize recreational marijuana use in Montana.

New Approach Montana is a political campaign supporting two complimentary 2020 ballot initiatives to legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana for adult use

New Approach Montana posted the following information on their website:

  • One initiative is a statutory measure that would legalize, regulate, and tax adult-use marijuana in Montana.
  • The second is a constitutional amendment that would give the state legislature the authority to set the minimum age of marijuana consumption at 21. Under the statutory proposal, marijuana sales would be taxed at 20%.
  • The law would give Montana medical marijuana providers first entry into the adult-use market, reduce the tax on medical marijuana to 1%, allow for limited personal possession and cultivation, tightly regulate production and distribution, shift regulatory authority for marijuana to the Montana Department of Revenue, and create new funds for veterans, healthcare, education, infrastructure and conservation efforts.New Approach Montana must gather and certify roughly 25,500 signatures to qualify the statutory initiative for the 2020 ballot and an additional 50,000 signatures for a constitutional amendment. They have until June 19, 2020 to gather signatures

If the initiatives receive the required number of signatures, they will be added to the ballot on November 3, 2020.

According to NAM, marijuana taxes are projected to generate more than $35 million a year for the state, which will go towards improving health care, education, infrastructure, and conservation efforts. All Montanans, especially veterans and those who love the outdoors, will benefit from this new revenue.
