It's summer and that means the rivers of Southwest Montana are packed with people on boats, rafts and tubes trying to beat the heat.

The Jefferson River, near Three Forks, is a popular destination for floating, fishing and just hanging out by the water.

Most of the time things go off without a hitch, but recently some river-goers between Sappington and Three Forks, have experienced unfortunate encounters with at least one river otter.

The fine folks at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks have issued a warning to the public by posting signs near the Jefferson River, informing people about the dangers that some of these aggressive creatures may pose after recent attacks on humans.

None of the injuries are believed to be serious, but a bite from an otter is most-likely a scary and painful experience.

These incidents are rare, but they are a stark reminder that we do live in an area with an abundance of wildlife and animals can be unpredictable on occasion.

Stay safe out there, Montana.
