It's that time of year - spring rainfall and the last of mountain snowmelt combine for flooding conditions on Montana rivers. The Jefferson River is now under a Flood Advisory.

  • WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues.
  • WHERE...A portion of southwest Montana, including the following counties, Broadwater, Gallatin, Jefferson and Madison.
  • WHEN...Until noon Saturday.
  • IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS... At 1040 AM Friday, gauge reports indicated rain and snowmelt could result in minor flooding along the Jefferson River from north of Twin Bridges to Three Forks.
  • Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area.
  • Some locations that will experience flooding include: Three Forks, Whitehall, Silver Star, Lewis And Clark Caverns State Park, Cardwell, Willow Creek and Waterloo.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

For the eastern half of Montana, many Flood Watches have been issued with the possibility of flash flooding. Heavy rains with thunderstorms continue to plague certain areas this week. Dangerous conditions exist in some low-lying areas.

  • WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • WHERE...Portions of central, south central, and southeast Montana, including the following areas, in central Montana, Musselshell. In south central Montana, Northeastern Yellowstone, Northern Big Horn, Southern Big Horn, Southwestern Yellowstone and Treasure. In southeast Montana, Carter, Custer, Fallon, Northern Rosebud, Powder River and Southern Rosebud.
  • WHEN...Through at least Friday evening.
  • IMPACTS...Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible.
  • Heavy rainfall the last few days has saturated the soil in many locations across the watch area.
  • The risk of thunderstorms with torrential rainfall rates, over ground that is already saturated, will increase the risk of flash flood issues through at least this evening.
  • This watch may need to be extended into the weekend as well for some areas.
