
Flathead Lake Faces Strong Winds And Safety Warnings Today
It's the most popular time of year to be hanging out on Flathead Lake. However, Wednesday afternoon and evening will see very conditions. Winds will be strong enough to create dangerous waves for small boats.
"Flathead Lake is the largest natural body of freshwater (by surface area) in the western U.S. and is also one of the cleanest lakes in the world." (Montana FWP)
As popular as the Flathead Lake area is, folks who are recreating need to pay special attention to the weather today. Swimming, boating, and other activities will be affected by waves and choppy water. Use caution!
- A LAKE WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM TO 11 PM WEDNESDAY.
- WHAT...Northeast winds 15 gusting to 35 mph are possible.
- Between Bigfork and Woods Bay gusts may exceed 40 mph, 8 to 10 pm.
- WHERE...Flathead/Mission Valleys.
- WHEN...From 6 PM to 11 PM Wednesday.
- IMPACTS...Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Boaters on area lakes should use extra caution since strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft.
"Flathead Lake State Park (FHLSP) has five mainland units circling the lake’s 191 square miles and covering 160 miles of shoreline." (Montana FWP)
Locals who are used to these conditions should keep an eye out for tourists who may not know how dangerous rough waves can be.

Other parts of Montana are getting strong wind gusts on Wednesday, too. Southwest Montana has been windy since Tuesday night, and gusts continue today.
