ALERT: Fort Peck Lake Area ‘Lake Wind Advisory’ Issued for Monday
All day Monday is looking to be quite windy on Fort Peck Lake and the surrounding area. The main concern is for boaters in small crafts. Winds up to 40 mph are expected throughout the day. Those winds pose a real danger for small boats and watercrafts.
This Lake Wind Advisory includes the Fort Peck Reservoir and Recreation Area. Fort Peck Lake is Montana's largest body of water and is extremely popular for fishing and recreation in that part of Montana.
- A LAKE WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM MONDAY MORNING TO 9 PM THIS EVENING.
- WHAT...West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected.
- WHERE...Fort Peck Lake.
- WHEN...From 6 AM this morning to 9 PM Monday evening.
- IMPACTS...Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should use extra caution since strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft.
According to Visit MT: "More than 50 different kinds of fish swim in Fort Peck Reservoir, Montana's largest body of water. The lake is about 134 miles in length and has a maximum depth of 220 feet when full. There are over 1,520 miles of shoreline, longer than the California coast."
"The reservoir was created from 1933 through 1937 by constructing a 3.8 mile-long dam across the Missouri River. Some of the hotly pursued species include walleye (a priority among the serious anglers!), northern pike, paddlefish, sauger, lake trout, small mouth bass and chinook salmon." (Visit MT)
