It Was A Disco In My Head

Prior to last night I had no idea what a silent disco was. I'm glad I went to Wild Joe's in downtown Bozeman to find out first hand. First off, for those of you who don't know what a Silent Disco is, here's Wikipedia with more:

Silent disco has become a common name for a disco where people dance to music listened to on headphones. Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via an FM transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participators. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing. Often two DJs compete for listeners. Silent discos are popular at music festivals as they allow dancing to continue past noise curfews. Similar events are mobile clubbing gatherings, where a group of people dance to the music on their personal music players.

The silent disco. If you saw the scene from outside, you'd either think you were passing by an insane asylum or you yourself were losing it. I guess they're much more common in parts of Europe but I knew nothing about them before Bozeman hosted one last night. I had so much fun, it was a strange, unique experience. There were three DJs competing for listeners last night as everyone was surfing through the three channels in wonderment.

Although it made personal communication very difficult, I liked the fact that everyone was forced to focus on music instead. I love music and sometimes wish more people would pay more attention to the music around them. What a brilliant idea.

Our little group quickly established hand gestures to inform each other what channel we were listening to. It was funny to see everyone doing this so often, so as to lure each other into their world. I was channel surfing less and less as the night progressed, it was very similar to channel surfing on the radio in a new town. I found what I liked and became a loyal listener. I was still giving the other guys a chance but had my preset favorite ready to go back "home" to.

It was hilarious to see all the independent dance parties that kept breaking out (especially when that person clearly wasn't listening to the same channel as you were). It was also very comical to turn down your volume completely and see all these weirdos dancing in complete silence (complete and udder silence). I like oddly new experiences and that's what I got last night. I didn't expect to enjoy the silent disco as much as I did, I hope there will be more Bozeman!
