Montana’s Biggest NHL Rivalry Right Now? Avalanche vs. Golden Knights
The puck drops tonight for the NHL Western Conference Final, and fans in Montana are already picking sides.
This year’s matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Colorado Avalanche features two teams that have built massive fan bases across the Treasure State.
From Bozeman and Billings to Kalispell and Great Falls, it’s hard to walk into a sports bar without seeing someone wearing either an Avalanche sweater or a Golden Knights hat.

The Colorado Avalanche has a huge fan base in Montana and has dominated opponents all season. The team has an opportunity to return to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since hoisting the cup in 2022.
Since entering the league in 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights have become one of the most popular teams in Montana, partly due to a media partnership that allows fans to watch most regular-season games.
I am a fan of the Vegas Golden Knights, and am hoping for a good, competitive series. It will be no easy task to get past the Avalanche, which has a stacked roster that includes superstar Nathan MacKinnon.
If you're a fan of professional hockey, it doesn't get much better than the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and when two of Montana's favorite teams are going head-to-head, it makes it much more interesting.
If you want to watch the game, you can find a full schedule of playoff games on the NHL website.
