The high elevations of southwest Montana got nearly 10 inches of snow this past weekend, and more is on the way. Up to 9 more inches of snow could fall in the Bridgers, Big Belts, and Castle mountains by mid-morning on Tuesday.

Ski season is getting another bump of good snow this week, as the next storm front makes it's way across southwest Montana mountains. However, VERY gust winds are likely to follow on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

These winds could gust up to 70 miles per hour along the I-90 corridor through Livingston, and the the Beartooth foothills. First, let's look at the details about the snowfall:

  • A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM TUESDAY.
  • WHAT...Snow expected.
  • Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches.
  • Isolated amounts near 9 inches at ridge tops.
  • WHERE...Big Belt, Bridger and Castle Mountains, Little Belt and Highwood Mountains, and Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains.
  • WHEN...Until 9 AM Tuesday.
  • IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Slow down and use caution while traveling.
  • The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1
  • A Winter Weather Advisory means that there is at least an 80% chance of minor impacts due to winter weather conditions during the advisory period.

Now, let's take a look at the dangers that might crop up following the storm front. Gusty winds of this magnitude could make travel very dangerous. Whiteout conditions can occur as the wind kicks the already-fallen snow around.
