Very gusty winds of up to 55 MPH will join forces with more than a foot of snow for some mountains of Montana through Wednesday. Travel may be difficult through several mountain passes. Visibility will drop considerably.

The Little Belt Mountains could get up to 24" of snow. NOT ALL STORM WARNINGS are calling for that much snow - but some high elevations could get DUMPED ON.

  • A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM TUESDAY TO 5 AM WEDNESDAY for high elevations of central Montana.
  • WHAT...Total snow accumulations between 12 and 24 inches in northerly upslope favored areas, with 5 to 12 inches possible elsewhere.
  • Winds could gust as high as 55 mph.
  • WHERE...Little Belt and Highwood Mountains.
  • WHEN...From 5 AM Tuesday to 5 AM Wednesday.
  • IMPACTS...Tire chains may be required for some vehicles if traveling through mountain passes.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
  • The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1 or visiting the MDT Road Report website.
  • Remember, a Winter Storm Warning means that there is at least an 80% chance of impactful winter weather conditions during the warning period.

  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
  • Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Be very cautions if you need to travel across the state during this time period. This storm could be very tricky - some higher elevations are going to get hammered with snow...other locations under a warning/advisory might only get a few inches.

  • IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.
