The high elevations and mountain passes of Montana are expecting quite a bit of snow by noon on Friday. Rain in the valleys is turning to snow on the ranges, and several Winter Storm Warnings have been issued.

The various Winter Storm Warnings are not the same. Some passes are going to get a dangerous amount of snow, others such as Homestake are not forecasted to get more than a few inches. For Gallatin and Madison counties of southwest Montana:

  • WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON FRIDAY
  • WHAT...Heavy snow expected.
  • Total snow accumulations up to 6 inches below 7000 feet, with 6 to 14 inches above 7000 feet.
  • WHERE...Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains.
  • WHEN...Until noon Friday.
  • IMPACTS...Tire chains may be required for some vehicles if traveling through mountain passes.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Hunters, especially those in the Gallatin, Gravelly, and Madison Ranges and Tobacco Root Mountains, should be prepared for winter conditions.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

The areas around Butte, Homestake Pass, Georgetown Lake, and MacDonald Pass are likely to get far less snow than Gallatin and Madison Counties. Their Winter Weather Advisory is short lived on Thursday.

HEAVY SNOW and lots of accumulation are expected in the Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains. Strong winds are also expected in that area, making visibility an issue. Their Winter Storm Warning is as follows:

  • WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM FRIDAY
  • WHAT...Heavy snow expected.
  • Total snow accumulations between 10 and 18 inches.
  • Winds gusting as high as 30 mph.
  • WHERE...Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains.
  • WHEN...Until 3 PM Friday.
  • IMPACTS...Recreation in the high country will be impacted by heavy accumulating snow.
