Björk fans are still waiting to find out what the title and release date of the singer's upcoming album will be — but they can catch an early glimpse of the set courtesy of its first single, "The Gate."

As previously reported, much of the details surrounding the LP remain shrouded in mystery — although a pre-order page has been set up and Björk's offered a few hints as to her new music's direction. Talking about the record's direction last spring, she contrasted its sound against her previous release, 2015's Vulnicura, calling that album a reflection of "hell" and suggesting her next effort would be a more upbeat affair.

"The last album, we sort of call it 'hell,'" said Björk. "It was like divorce! So we are doing paradise now. Utopia. We have done hell, we have earned some points."

As Rolling Stone notes, "The Gate" can be taken somewhat literally in terms of its title; according to Björk, the song addresses her return to love after a period of emotional turmoil — although true to form, it may not be as straightforward as that sounds. "'The Gate' is essentially a love song, but I say ‘love’ in a more transcendent way," she explained. "Vulnicura was about a very personal loss, and I think this new album is about a love that’s even greater. It’s about rediscovering love — but in a spiritual way, for lack of a better word."

The video for "The Gate" is set to be unveiled this weekend, and fans who visit the pre-order site can also purchase a limited-edition vinyl edition of the single while supplies last. Stream "The Gate" courtesy of the Spotify embed below.
