
Fire Danger Rises In Southern Wyoming As Heat And Winds Persist
Fire danger has increased in southern Wyoming, with Red Flag Warnings being issued for most south central areas. If you will be traveling through the area, especially with any towing units, use extra caution. Any dragging chains can spark and start wildfires.
There have been two wildfires in southern Wyoming in recent weeks, both of which have been 100% contained. However, hot temperatures, low humidity, and wind all contribute to an increased fire danger.
The area northwest of Laramie is one of the areas of fire danger. I-80 runs right through it.
Although not yet banned, outdoor burning and campfires are not recommended within the Red Flag area in Wyoming.
"A Red Flag Warning signifies a high fire danger due to a combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Essentially, it's a warning to be extra cautious with any potential ignition sources." (National Weather Service)
- A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM WEDNESDAY FOR DRY AND BREEZY CONDITIONS
- The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect until 10 PM Wednesday.
- AFFECTED AREA...Fire weather zone 420. Fire weather zone 421.
- Fire weather zone 422.
- Fire weather zone 425.
- WIND...10 to 15 mph gusting up to 25 mph.
- HUMIDITY...10 to 15 percent. Overnight recovery 25 to 30 percent.
- IMPACTS...any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
- Outdoor burning is not recommended.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly.
- A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
