Thursday is going to be quite windy on Fort Peck Lake with thunderstorms possible throughout the day in the surrounding area. Wind gusts up to 35 mph or more will create hazardous conditions for any small craft on the lake.

Rain and a few thunderstorms are expected in a few regions across Montana on Thursday, but the Fort Peck Lake area was the only location where Wind Advisories were in effect, as of 8am Thursday morning.

  • LAKE WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THURSDAY MORNING TO 9 PM THURSDAY EVENING.
  • WHAT...West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph expected.
  • WHERE...Fort Peck Lake.
  • WHEN...until 9 PM Thursday.
  • IMPACTS...Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Stronger wind gusts are possible in the vicinity of thunderstorms this evening.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should use extra caution since strong winds and rough waves can overturn small craft.

Notes about Fort Peck: The Fork Peck Lake is a big reservoir on the eastern prairie of Montana. The arms of Fort Peck reach into 6 counties, and the entire area is prone to gusty winds. 40 mph winds aren't that big of a deal off the water, but on the lake - it can get very dangerous for smaller boats.
