Thursday will be quite windy on Montana's Fort Peck Lake. Boaters and recreationalists should use caution while on the reservoir. Small boats could encounter hazardous conditions with waves, caused by 35 MPH winds.

Fort Peck Lake is an amazing reservoir, that is quite massive. It has an interesting history and geography, not to mention the fantastic fishing it offers.

However, the reservoir is often plagued by gusty winds - and with no protective mountains, those winds create dangerous waves.

How does wind develop around lakes so often? "Lake breezes develop when the land becomes warmer than the water. The warm air over land rises, and gets replaced by the relatively cool air which resides immediately above the lake surface."
