Alert For New Gardens: Idaho Frost Advisory Overnight
Everyone in the Rocky Mountains has Spring Fever, and many of us have already planted seeds for our gardens. Be aware that if you've put any outside in boxes or pots - they're susceptible to frost overnight into Thursday.
A few areas in Idaho are of concern: places near St. Anthony, Rexburg, and Idaho Falls - along with areas west of there towards Arco.
Highway 20 and Interstate 15 run right through this current Idaho Frost Advisory.
"A Frost Advisory is issued when the minimum temperature is forecast to be 33 to 36 degrees on clear and calm nights during the growing season." (Yeah, we did notice that this particular advisory called for an overnight low of 32.)
- IDAHO: A FROST ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM TO 8 AM THURSDAY.
- WHAT...Temperatures as low as 32 could result in frost formation.
- WHERE...Arco/Mud Lake Desert and Upper Snake River Plain.
- WHEN...From 3 AM to 8 AM Thursday.
- IMPACTS...Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation.
- Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
Protecting plants and seeds can be as simple as covering them overnight and the early morning hours. If young plants are in pots that can be moved, placing them in a proper garage can also be sufficient.
You should cover plants at night when temperatures are predicted to drop to 32°F (0°C) or below, as this is when freezing temperatures can cause damage.
However, the specific temperature at which you should cover plants may also depend on the plant's cold tolerance, with some plants needing protection at higher temperatures.
