Latest Montana Storm Full Of Prize Snow: 8″ More Likely

Lots of mountain snow is falling in Montana, which is great news. Montana is still very far behind normal average snowpack levels and drought concerns are still big. Towns and valleys can expect some snow, but high elevations across Montana are expecting 4" to 8" of fresh snow, with up to a foot in some locations.

Montana's snowpack levels have been very concerning for weeks, and although there has been some improvement, you can see from the SNOTEL map below that we're still very far below average in many parts of the state. More snow is needed.

Advisories and Warnings have been issued for the entire western half of Montana, with different amounts of snow expected. Some high elevations could see up to a foot of much needed snow by Thursday night.

• WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 8 inches.

• WHEN...Until 11 PM Thursday.
• IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

• Areas near Butte can expect the following:
• A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 11 AM THURSDAY.
• WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 8 inches...up to 11 inches in the mountains.
• Gusty winds to 25 mph may cause blowing and drifting in the higher elevations on Wednesday and Wednesday night.
• Black ice will be a concern at night.
• WHERE...Butte, Highway 12 Garrison to Elliston, Georgetown Lake, MacDonald Pass, and Homestake Pass.
• WHEN...From 7 PM this evening to 11 AM Thursday.
• IMPACTS...Travel could be affected. Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick.

• WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches.
• WHERE...Eastern Pondera and Eastern Teton Counties, Southern High Plains, Western and Central Chouteau County, Cascade County below 5000ft, and Gates of the Mountains.
• WHEN...Until 11 PM Thursday.
• IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.
• Patchy fog and or snow may reduce visibility down to a half mile or less at times.
