Show us your Montana garden successes
This year has just a few, colorful gardening successes for me. Usually I have plenty of flowers and vegetables, but the only things I can take pride in this year are my simple flower baskets and pots. How is your garden growing?
I LOVE seeing pictures from other Montana gardens. There are several Facebook groups that are dedicated to gardening in various forms and thankfully they're chock full of great stuff. (We also commiserate about the bummer stuff...)
Normally I start a ton of flowers and vegetables inside. This year I was far more conservative about how much stuff I planted, knowing that most years I start way too much. That was my first mistake. I lost quite a few starts so what I could put outside was slim.
My next mistake was not biting the bullet and purchasing healthy vegetable starts from a local vendor. I mean, if you can't do it yourself there's no shame in that game. For some reason I held out hope that at least my tomatoes would bulk up and be strong enough for the outside world. Never happened.
Homegrown sunflowers have always been my thing. But they were another minor flop this year. I really enjoy growing shorty sunflowers that can be planted in pots or the ground. Normally I have dozens of them. This year, I have about a dozen in pots and although they're 'healthy,' they're very small. The giant ones I started indoors never made it outside. (Sunflowers don't love being transplanted but they can be if you're gentle with them.)
Take a minute and share with us your best garden pictures from this year! Montana gardening can be very tricky but we've seen some lovely stuff just driving around town, and across the state. What's been your nicest surprise? Happy gardening!
